Staying Safe while traveling

Traveling can be an exciting and enriching experience, but it is important to prioritize safety while doing so. Here are 12 tips to help you stay safe while traveling:

  1. Research your destination: Before you go, research the area you will be visiting. Find out about any safety concerns or potential dangers and take precautions accordingly. This can include avoiding certain neighborhoods or areas, or taking extra care to secure your belongings.

  2. Keep your valuables secure: Make sure to keep your valuables (passport, money, phone, etc.) secure while you are traveling. Consider using a money belt, crossbody bag, or protective clothing and backpacks with special features like slash proof straps, lockable zippers, and RFID blockers, to assist with making it harder for pickpockets to get to your belongs. You may also want to consider locking your belongings in a hotel safe.

  3. Try not to draw unnecessary attention and blend in: Avoid conspicuous clothing and flashy jewelry, especially if you plan to travel to crowded areas. If you are lost, try to step into a café, or shop to discretely ask for directions.

  4. Drink Responsibly: I cannot stress this point more. It is fun to explore the local nightlife, but keep in mind when traveling you are in an unfamiliar setting with unfamiliar people. You could end up in a dangerous neighborhood, or become a target for crime. Please also remember to keep your eyes on your drink at all times.

  5. Be mindful of your money: Do not carry large amounts of cash and if you have to, do your best to not show it to anyone. Instead, try to use internationally accepted credit cards. Also do not keep all of your funds in one place so that you have a backup in case something gets stolen.

  6. Stay aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to your surroundings and be aware of any potential dangers. This can include keeping an eye out for pickpockets, avoiding dark or isolated areas, and being cautious of strangers. Someone who seems distracted or disengaged is an easier target. This is particularly important for solo travelers, especially female solo travelers. Also if someone around you is making you feel uncomfortable or unsure, trust that feeling and get yourself to a safe space.

  7. Use reputable transportation: If possible, use transportation and touring companies recommended by your hotel or a reputable taxi company. If using Uber or Lyft, verify the vehicle, license plate, and driver information in your application before getting into the vehicle.

  8. Know the number for emergency services: Know the numbers for emergency services and your embassy before you arrive. It is best to save them to your phone and have them on a printed paper in case your phone gets lost.

  9. Don't travel alone at night: If possible, avoid traveling alone at night. Stick to well-lit areas and busy streets, and consider taking a taxi or public transportation instead of walking.

  10. Keep copies of important documents: Make copies of your passport, travel insurance, and any other important documents, and keep them in a safe place. You can also keep digital copies that are able to be accessed. This can be helpful in case your original documents are lost or stolen.

  11. Stay in touch with loved ones: Keep in touch with family or friends back home often, so they know where you are and how you are doing. Consider setting up regular check-ins so they can stay up-to-date on your travels. Share your itinerary before you leave and communicate updates if it changes.

  12. Follow local customs and laws: Be respectful of local customs and laws, and avoid doing anything that could be considered offensive or illegal.

Remember, staying safe while traveling is all about being prepared and aware. With these tips in mind, our goal is to help you to enjoy your travels with confidence and peace of mind.
